The Old School Masters Cabernet Merlot 2018 - 94 Points

Wonderfully ripe and beautifully lifted, the inviting bouquet shows blackcurrant, Black Doris plum, cedar and vanilla characters with nuances of dried herb and mixed spice. The palate delivers excellent fruit concentration and weight, superbly complemented by silky texture and fine, chalky tannins. Flavoursome and highly enjoyable. At its best: 2020 to 2030. AU$30.00. www.heidenreichvineyards.com.au. June 2019.

The Old School Graduates Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 - 95 Points

A stunning cabernet offering power and grace; the beautifully lifted bouquet shows crème de cassis, dark plum, cigar box and warm spice aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that displays outstanding depth and richness, brilliantly structured by loads of silky tannins. It is mouth-filling and gratifying. At its best: 2020 to 2032. AU$35.00. www.heidenreichvineyards.com.au. June 2019.

The Old School Principals Shiraz 2017 - 95 Points

Gorgeously rich and sweetly fruited, the fabulously expressed bouquet shows dark fruit intensity together with vanilla, game, anise and cedar characters. The palate is equally impressively with wonderful weight and fleshy mouthfeel, splendidly framed by silky tannins. Multi-layered and hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2032. AU$35.00. www.heidenreichvineyards.com.au. June 2019.

The Owl's Wine Ratings:

A PROPER BAROSSA CHARDONNAY BARGAIN

It was a desire for a change from his nightly riesling tipple at the Tanunda Club that led the Owl to the Heidenreich Vineyards Old School Class of 2017 Chardonnay. Now Barossa and chardonnay normally don't go together. The climate is not cool enough say the experts and most of the Valley's chardonnay vines have made way for the far more profitable shiraz.
Up at Vine Vale on the outskirts of Tanunda the Heidenreich family have continued to be unfashionable and, blow me down, have made a most drinkable chardonnay. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back for more.
On the Owl's rating score it is a 92 - one of the very few wines tasted this year that are above the 90 level.

Heidenreich Estate Old School Cabernet Merlot

Real crowd pleaser. Delicate, classic style with blackcurrant fruit dominating the blend, showing a sweet licorice edge. Complex on the finish.

Heidenreich Estate Old School Cabernet Merlot

Deep purple-red; it is not easy to produce good cabernet merlot in the Barossa Valley, but this shows it can be done, with its generous but not thick or jammy palate crammed with cassis and plum fruit; tannin and oak are secondary players.

Crackawines Reviews:

Heidenreich Estate Old School Graduates Cabernet Sauvignon

This is quite a 'nuggety' style of wine that has a touch of body-builder about it. There's about 15% alcohol in this puppy, and on the nose it shows lots of plummy fruits, mocha and baked spices on the nose. The palate is full-bodied and uber-ripe, with generous licks of chocolaty oak and fruitcake, smooth tannins, and a juicy, warming finish. Needs meat!

Heidenreich Estate Principal Shiraz

Here we have another 'big boy' wine from Heidenreich weighing in at around 15% alcohol. It's a rich style that shows dark berries and plums on the nose, with some whiffs of apricot that might have you thinking there's a bit of viognier in this. The palate is fullsome and lush, with tastes of plum pudding, anise and pepper, licks of mocha oak, friendly tannins, and a warm, juicy finish.
